It has often been said that a nice healthy smile is a persons’ most attractive feature. We can tell a lot about someone just from their smile. In this article I would like to cover some common mistakes made when brushing teeth and how to go about brushing your teeth properly by correcting these mistakes and following my three key tips.

6 Top Tips to a Better Brushing Routine

Tip 1

Most people believe that brushing their teeth directly after they have eaten is a good idea.  Unfortunately, this is a common mistake that could lead to damaging your teeth.  The saliva within our mouths’ has the specific job of neutralising the acids caused by eating and drinking.  A set time period of one hour should be allowed after eating or drinking so the saliva can do its’ job effectively.  Ignoring this time period could weaken the enamel of the teeth as the acid softens the enamel and can be worn away by brushing.

Tip 2

The first tip is in choosing which type of toothbrush to use. There are two types of toothbrushes, electrical or manual, both are very effective at cleaning. The more common of the two being manual. The best kind of manual toothbrush should include a compacted angled arrangement of short and long, medium firm rounded bristles.

If you choose to use an electric toothbrush, make sure that you use one that has rotation oscillation brushes. Electric toothbrushes with this kind of movement of bristles are the most effective

Remember to renew your toothbrush every three months and never share your toothbrush with anyone else. Electric toothbrushes have detachable heads which can be cheaply & easily changes when required. Either an electric or a manual toothbrush is suitable but an electric toothbrush can have several advantages over manual, but really it depends upon individual choice.

Tip 3

How much toothpaste should you use? Children up to the age of three should only use a smear of toothpaste (1000ppm), children aged three years to six should use a pea sized amount of toothpaste (1,350-1,500ppm) and adults should use toothpaste with at least (1,450ppm) of fluoride. We recommend choosing toothpaste from a reputable brand such as Oral-B or Colgate.

Tip 4

How often should we brush our teeth and for how long each time?.  We should brush our teeth for a minimum time of two minutes at least twice daily.  In the morning before we eat and just before we go to bed at night.  It is also recommended you brush ideally one hour after your evening meal.  Teeth should be brushed in a circular motion and also up and down.  Care should be taken when we reach the gum line.  The toothbrush should be angled at an angle 45 degrees gently apply a little pressure the flick the brush away from the gum line.  Never brush across the gums but ensure this is done properly as this is where bacteria Has a tendency to build up.

Tip 5

Finally, use mouthwash after brushing instead of rinsing with water. After brushing most people simply rinse with water. But by doing this you are washing the fluoride out of your mouth. The fluoride strengthens teeth enamel and makes teeth more resistant to cavity causing acids. By rinsing with a mouthwash contain fluoride you are protecting your teeth further between brushing times.

Tip 6

Lastly, remember to brush your tongue and sides of your inner mouth.  This should also be carried out for at for a minimum of two minutes at least twice daily.  A smile can say a lot about a person what does your smile say about you?   Remember the choice is yours.
